Northrop Grumman Corporation will provide up to $17.5M to Caltech in a joint effort to develop space-based, solar power systems. The project is the Space Solar Power Initiative (SSPI) and aims to capture solar power in space and send to earth. According to SoCal Tech, Northrop said the project aims to generate electric power at cost parity with grid-connected fossil fuel power plants. Professor Harry A. Atwater is leading the research along with Ali Hajimiri Jr. and Sergio Pellegrino. Tina Casey of Clean Technica provides some analysis of the project.
